When Clay Santell stops in the community of Sutterville after having his horse taken, he is misinterpreted by townspeople for a killer called Travers. The townspeople capture Santell, and turn him over to lawman Harry Deckett. Deckett, that is tired of going after the real Travers, determines to eliminate Santell and pass him off as Travers. Santell runs away from Deckett, taking wonderful Janet Gifford captive at the same time. Janet concerns believe Santell's tale, and also aids him in his struggle to show his real identity.
